Tony Cofresi was born in the Bronx on November 22, 1940 to Amparo Lopez and Antonio Cofresi of Cabo Rojo Puerto Rico. He grew up on Whales Avenue. During those times the neighborhood predominantly was Italian and Irish. Tony wanted to be a cowboy as a child. He would frequently rope lasso kids as they rode by on their bikes. Cofresi was sent to church to stay out of trouble and that’s where started playing trumpet, at 12 yrs of age. He started playing classical music. He was in love with trumpet ever since.
Tony was married 4 times. He had 6 kids. 3 girls 3 boys. He played trumpet in high school. Dropped out joined the Marines in the fifties and was honorably discharged. Soon after Tony was picked up Tito Rogriguez, and also played with Silvester, Paquito Guzman, Machito and countless others. His son Robin informed us that Tony really spoke frequently of Machito and really loved him as a person. That’s around the time he met Robin’s mom. She was the person that did the performers hair and stage make up.
Tony, after being married 3 times settled down with Robin’s mom. He eventually stayed local in the Bronx, playing the trumpet and obtained a masters degree in music from Lehman college in the bronx.
Cofresi’s trumpet instructor was Carmine Caruso as an adult. Tony frequently would go play in Harlem, American jazz. He really loved that in the 90s, especially because Dizzy Gillespie was there sometimes.
Tony was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and was always supportive personally and musically. I will miss you, Tony.
