I’ve been friends with this legendary bassist for around 40 years. I remember the 1st time I saw him play. I was still a newbie on the scene when I saw him playing with some band (I honestly don’t remember what band it was) in a club/bar in NYC, on 2nd avenue called Christopher’s.
Needless to say, I was impressed and I told him so. I didn’t yet know who he was. He said thanks, as he’s always been an approachable and nice guy. This was probably late 1974 or early 1975. I started on the scene with Larry Harlow’s band in October of 74. Obviously I saw him quite a bit after that in all the Latin clubs as he played around with lots of different bands back then.
Over the years we played together in several bands, did some traveling together and I’m proud to call him a good friend. Although he lives in Florida, we speak on the phone every once in a while and I’m grateful that he took the time to grant me this interview while he was in town for a few days, so that you, the followers of Salsa Legends And Masters Academy, could get to hear about his career directly from him.
